Pokémon battle simulator: how it works

PokéFinals is a daily Pokémon battle simulator that turns your draft into a seeded, automatic tournament. It is designed to make team choices matter, not to reproduce every detail of a cartridge battle.

01

How are moves and turn order decided?

Each Pokémon has four moves. The simulator usually chooses the damaging move with the strongest estimated matchup, weighing power, type effectiveness, same-type attack bonus and the relevant Attack or Special Attack against the defender’s matching stat. Some setup moves may be used occasionally. Priority moves act before ordinary moves; otherwise Speed decides, with seeded randomness breaking ties.

02

How is damage calculated?

Damage ranges are calculated with the Smogon damage calculator, using level 50 stats and a generated battle set. A seeded roll chooses a value within that range. HP lost carries through the current fight; when a Pokémon faints, the next living team member enters. Teams start fresh in the next match.

03

Which battle rules are simplified?

This is not a full competitive battle engine. To keep daily runs consistent, the damage calculator currently uses Generation 9 battle rules for Pokémon from every generation. Move selection and some status effects are also simplified, so results are best read as a strategic matchup simulation, not an exact prediction of an in-game battle.
